History of Prahran


In 1837, George Langhorne named the area Pur-ra-ran, a composite of two aboriginal words, meaning "land partially surrounded by water." When he reported to the Surveyor-General, Robert Hoddle of the name, it was written as "Prahran." That¡¦s the name come from.

Between 1890s and 1930s, Prahran built up a large shopping center. Huge emporiums build up along Chapel Street fo rivaled the Melbourne Central Business District at 1920s. And Prahran become a most important enterainment area. Lot of theatre builds around Chapel Street.

Prahran was merged as a municipal district on 24 April 1855, Then it became a borough on 1 October 1863, and a town on 13 May 1870. Afterward became a City on 30 May 1879. Finally, on 22 June 1994, the City of Prahran was abolished and incorporated with Malvern to be the new formed City of Stonnington. And The Prahran Twon Hall becomes a service center for the City of Stonnington.
